1 cat of average size and looks - 5 euros
1 dog of size and looks complimentary to cat - 10 euros
Hours to train cat and dog to peacefully sit adjacent to one another on mat = 117
Hours to learn "please help, they're hungry" in 14 languages = 27

Return on Investment = neverending.

Just returned from a week's vacation in Cannes, during which I witnessed the above, which could be the single best streetside marketing tactic ever employed by man.  It's a well-known truth that people respond to cute animals, but place two cute animals in a surprising situation, and prepare to rake in the money (from tourists like myself, all too willing to fork over a bit of cash for another look and a laugh).

Reboot!

One can only take digi-invasion and biking while breathing bus exhaust for so long... 

So over the bank holiday weekend I headed out of the house with nothing but my bike, camera, a change of clothes, a general sense of a southerly direction and a strong faith in the kindness of strangers to point me in the right direction should I get lost (inevitable). 

Brilliant day all around.

Broke a few speed limits:

Came to terms with my level of fitness while crossing the "hill" a local warned me about (I scoffed at the time):

Discovered that four mini-deaths and a bruised ego were worth it for the view:

Finally reached Brighton and realized it was not for me:  more stella, fish and chips and sunburned masses than rose wine, cracked crab and families by the seashore.

So kept heading East until I found a remote cliff to spend the afternoon reading on, a gorgeous town called Seaford, and a few locals nice enough to spend the better part of an hour trying to help me find a B&B with vacancy on a bank holiday weekend.

But no luck - ended up (once again) exhausted after riding 50 miles, far from home, with only an inkling of how to get back.  No better way to end a day.
